MUSCAT : The initiative aims to evaluate and identify the most effective systems that can contribute to improving road safety standards across the Sultanate. The devices under trial are expected to enhance the monitoring and regulation of traffic violations, promote safer driving behaviour.
It is pertinent to note that the ROP, in line with the ongoing Gulf Traffic Week 2025 under the slogan ‘Driving Without a Phone’, is intensifying its efforts to combat the growing threat of mobile phone usage while driving – a leading cause of traffic accidents in the Sultanate.
To this end, the ROP has begun deploying advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology to detect and deter violations.
Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Hamoud Al Falahi, Director General of Traffic at the Royal Oman Police, had announced that artificial intelligence-powered surveillance systems are now active on Omani roads. These advanced cameras are capable of detecting drivers using their phones with a high degree of accuracy, helping authorities identify violations in real time.
In addition to detecting infractions, the systems assist in monitoring traffic flow, locating congestion points, and identifying vehicles of interest. Extensive trials have already been conducted to ensure the technology’s effectiveness.
