MUSCAT: Oman residents whose visas have expired but are stranded outside the country due to the airport closure can renew it online through their employer or sponsor and can return to the country once the airport reopens, according to a top Royal Oman Police (ROP) official.
Speaking in an interview with national radio, Major Mohammed bin Rashid Al Habsi, the Assistant Director of the Directorate General of Passports and Residence said that the employer or sponsor of the expat resident can send him/her the receipt once the visa has been renewed online. “This is an exceptional period that has caused difficulties for the business sector and the Royal Oman Police is providing facilities to renew visas online especially for those are stranded outside the country” Al Habsi said.
Sponsors of the residents can also visit the Directorate General to renew their visas. “These facilities have also been provided to prevent crowding and gathering of people at ROP service offices to limit the spread of COVID-19,” Al Habsi pointed out.

According to Al Habsi, the ROP has also exempted the residence status of those who are currently stranded outside the country for more than six months.
Earlier when its service centres were closed during the coronavirus outbreak, the ROP had sought to provide automatic extension of all visit visas from March 19 to June 30. The service halls were reopened on July 1.
