OTTAWA: Justin Trudeau on Monday resigned as leader of Canada’s governing party after nearly a decade as prime minister.

Trudeau said in a news conference in Ottawa that he will stay on as PM until a new Liberal Party leader is chosen. Trudeau said he made his decision to resign after having long conversation with his family.

“This country deserves a real choice in the next election, and it has become clear to me that if I’m having to fight internal battles, I cannot be the best option in that election,” he said at the news conference.

The move would leave the Liberal Party without a permanent leader before the general election, where polls show it is set to badly lose to the opposition Conservative Party.
