Muscat – This depreciation has also impacted the exchange rate in Oman, where the Indian Rupee is being offered at Rs 218.20 for one Omani Rial – as of Monday, 14 October.
Reports indicate that the Indian Rupee reached a new record low against the US Dollar (USD) on Monday, as it dipped to a historic low of 84.0725 to the US dollar, surpassing the previous record of 84.07 set on Friday. This significant depreciation highlights the ongoing challenges facing the Indian Rupee in the current market conditions.
Financial experts attribute the fall in the INR to several factors, including heavy withdrawals of foreign institutional investor funds from Indian stock markets, a surge in crude oil prices, and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Additionally, India’s shrinking Balance of Payments surplus and rising merchandise trade deficit have weakened the INR’s position.
While other emerging market currencies have also depreciated against the USD, the Indian Rupee has been relatively stable due to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) intervention to maintain currency stability. However, the recent decline suggests that the INR may face further downward pressure in the short term.
According to analysts in India, factors such as the US Federal Reserve’s potential interest rate cuts, fluctuations in crude oil prices, uncertainty surrounding the US economy, and shifts in asset classes could influence the future movement of the rupee-dollar exchange rate.
Despite the RBI’s efforts to protect the INR, analysts anticipate that the currency may continue to weaken in the coming period. The ongoing economic challenges and global market conditions will play a crucial role in determining the trajectory of the Indian Rupee.
