MUSCAT: Despite lifting the lockdown in Muscat Governorate, the Royal Oman Police has clarified that ban on gatherings in public places including beaches will continue to contain the spread of coronavirus.
Speaking to The Arabian Stories, a senior ROP official urged citizens and residents to stay away from gatherings. “Lifting the lockdown does not mean people can gather at beaches or any other public places. There is no change in that and gatherings of all types are still banned,” he said.
Several people have raised doubts about going to the beaches after lockdown restrictions were lifted in Muscat Governorate last week. However, the ROP official reiterated that violators will be fined if they defy the Supreme Committee decisions.

OMR 1,500 fine for public gatherings
According to the rules set by ROP, if five or more people gather in a public place, it will be considered as a violation and they will be detained and fined OMR 1,500. An administrative fine of OMR 100 will be charger against individuals participating in these gatherings. “There are cases where people are caught walking without following the social distancing rules and not wearing masks. As said earlier, the fine for not wearing face masks is OMR 20 and it will be doubled if the violation is repeated,” he said.
Over the last few weeks, despite repeated warnings from authorities, hundreds of people were detained and fined for gatherings in public places. Oman on Wednesday reported 738 new coronavirus cases, taking the total tally to 13,538.
