MUSCAT: Oman has decided to step up crackdown on illegal foreign workers with weekly inspections and raids.

This week alone, 61 illegal workers were arrested from several parts of Muscat governorate.

Meanwhile, a top official at Ministry of Manpower (MoM) has cautioned companies against hiring illegal workers.

“It is illegal to hire a worker without proper documents from the authorities concerned,” said the official.

Last week, MoM had referred a business owner to Public Prosecution after he let more than 500 of his employees to work illegally in the country. The Ministry also found that he owned 63 commercial registrations.

Thousands of illegal workers are caught and deported every year despite warnings from the authorities. “Many of these workers are either those who ran away from their sponsors or entered the country illegally,” he added.

According to the Labour Law, both sponsors and employers, if caught for such violations, can be fined up to RO 2,000.
