MUSCAT: The federation said mental health should be treated as a key component of the work environment, noting that a healthy workplace can support modern working practices, help change traditional patterns and strengthen workers’ sense of belonging to their organisations.

The issue was highlighted in an investigation published by the federation-affiliated Sawaed Naqabia magazine under the theme ‘Productivity begins with safety’.

The report cited Article 19 of Oman’s Occupational Safety and Health Measures Regulations, which requires medical examinations for workers nominated for jobs that could expose them to occupational diseases.

According to the regulation, the examinations are intended to assess workers’ physical, mental and psychological capabilities before they begin work. The examinations must also correspond to the nature of the job and the type of occupational disease to which the worker could be exposed.

Dawood bin Sulaiman Al Ghafri, Head of the Occupational Safety Department at Oman’s Ministry of Labour, was cited in the report in connection with the importance of workplace safety and health measures.
