MUSCAT : The milestone was achieved during a specialised training workshop organised as part of the National Heart Centre’s efforts to develop advanced cardiac services, enhance the skills of medical teams, and localise modern treatment technologies in the field of heart rhythm disorders.
The patients who underwent the procedures are in stable health condition and are continuing their recovery according to their prescribed treatment plans, the centre said.
The extraction of cardiac device electrodes through the vein is considered one of the most complex procedures in cardiac electrophysiology. It is required in cases involving infections, device malfunction, or the need to replace or upgrade cardiac devices.
The procedure requires advanced preparation and coordination among multidisciplinary medical teams to ensure patient safety and achieve optimal treatment outcomes.
Dr. Najib bin Zahran Al Rawahi, Director of the National Heart Centre, said the success of the workshop reflects the strong integration between various medical and technical specialties at the centre.
He said the achievement was the result of teamwork, coordinated planning, and the readiness of national medical professionals to provide advanced specialised cardiac care in line with international standards and best practices.
Dr. Al Rawahi highlighted the contribution of cardiac electrophysiology, cardiology, cardiac surgery, anaesthesia, nursing, surgical, and cardiac intensive care teams in ensuring the success of all stages of treatment — from case assessment and treatment planning to performing the procedures and monitoring patients until their condition stabilised.
The specialised workshop was led by the cardiac electrophysiology team at the National Heart Centre, with participation from consultants and specialists in cardiology, cardiac surgery, anaesthesia, nursing, and medical technology, alongside surgical and cardiac intensive care teams.
The workshop followed a scientific and training programme organised in cooperation with Dr. Omar Al Razzo from La Paz University Hospital in Madrid, Spain, aimed at transferring expertise and building national capabilities in pacemaker lead extraction procedures.
The initiative is expected to contribute to establishing a sustainable cardiac device electrode extraction programme in the Sultanate of Oman.
