MUCAT – Specialists from the Environment Authority’s centre in the Wilayat of Masirah, South Sharqiyah Governorate, identified the turtle during routine field monitoring on the beach in the Al Aijah area.

Ghassi bin Hamad Al Farsi, Environmental Monitoring Supervisor at the centre in Masirah, said the turtle was tagged during the 2014 nesting season at the same location, adding that its return contributes to documented records of loggerhead turtle movements along Masirah’s beaches.
He explained that the sighting confirms the species’ known behaviour of returning to its original nesting sites, a phenomenon scientifically known as site fidelity.

Al Farsi noted that monitoring showed the female turtle remains in an active reproductive state despite more than a decade since its last recorded observation.
The latest sighting has been included in the field data for the 2026 nesting season and added to the database of tagged turtles monitored by the Environment Authority as part of its long-term sea turtle nesting beach management programme on Masirah Island.
