MUSCAT : The ministry said heatstroke cases tend to increase during the summer months, highlighting the importance of awareness and timely action to preventing serious health complications. The advisory forms part of its ‘Summer with Health and Safety’ campaign aimed at promoting public health during periods of extreme heat.

The ministry pointed out that heatstroke is a medical condition caused by prolonged exposure to high temperatures or spending extended periods under direct sunlight. Symptoms include a severe rise in body temperature above 40°C (104°F), rapid heartbeat accompanied by a weak pulse, nausea, dizziness, fainting, difficulty concentrating, loss of consciousness, convulsions, and red, dry skin.

The ministry advised members of the public to seek immediate medical assistance if a person shows signs of heatstroke. First-aid measures include moving the affected individual to a shaded and cool location, removing unnecessary outer clothing, applying cold, damp cloths to the head, neck, armpits and groin, and cooling the body with water or an ice bath where possible. The patient should also be exposed to cool air or fans until medical help arrives.

It further warned that untreated heatstroke can lead to serious complications, including damage to vital organs, loss of consciousness and even death.

To reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses, the ministry urged residents to drink plenty of water, particularly during physical activities, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours, wear lightweight and light-coloured clothing, and protect their heads with hats or umbrellas.
