MUSCAT : The operation, carried out within the University Medical City framework, marks the first procedure of its kind in Oman and reflects the growing advancement of specialised healthcare services in the country.

The surgery was led by Dr Nasser bin Mohammed Al Tamami, Consultant Surgeon at Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, and was conducted using advanced medical equipment and an integrated clinical team with specialised expertise.

Medical officials said the procedure represents a significant step forward in treating complex inner ear conditions that do not respond to conventional therapies, offering improved outcomes for patients and reducing the need for treatment abroad.

The technique is used in the management of Ménière’s disease, a disorder of the inner ear characterised by recurring episodes of vertigo, hearing loss accompanied by tinnitus, and a sensation of pressure in the ear. In severe cases, the condition can lead to progressive or complete hearing loss.

Health specialists noted that the achievement supports ongoing efforts to enhance clinical precision, strengthen integration between diagnosis and treatment, and develop national medical capabilities through training and research.
