Washington: Representing Oman at one of the world’s leading scientific exhibitions, students from the Sultanate delivered outstanding performances that highlighted the growing capabilities of Omani youth in research, innovation, and technology.

Students Ward bint Badr Al-Balushi and Rimas bint Qais Al-Balushi from Al-Amal School (Grades 10-12), under the Directorate General of Education in South Al Batinah Governorate, secured fourth place globally in the field of environmental engineering.

The duo was recognised for their invention titled “A Passive System Based on Ophiolites Using Plasmonic Technology and Photocatalytic Treatment of Water Associated with Oil Production,” an innovative project aimed at addressing environmental challenges linked to the oil sector through advanced water treatment solutions.

In another achievement, students Ibrahim bin Mohammed Al-Zarouni and Abdul Rahman bin Khalid Al-Balushi from Saad bin Abi Waqas School (Grades 9-12), affiliated with the Directorate General of Education in North Al Batinah Governorate, received a special award and student membership from the American Psychological Association in the field of social and behavioral sciences.

Their award-winning project focused on “An Artificial Intelligence-Based System for Analyzing and Supporting Student Interaction Within the Classroom,” reflecting the growing role of AI in enhancing educational environments and student engagement.

The International Science and Engineering Fair brings together innovators and researchers from around the world to compete across 22 scientific disciplines, including engineering, computer science, environmental studies, and social sciences. The exhibition serves as a global platform for showcasing student-led scientific research and promoting innovation and creativity among young minds.

Participation in the exhibition also offers students opportunities to exchange knowledge and experiences with peers from different countries, broadening their academic, cultural, and intellectual horizons.

The Ministry of Education stated that these achievements reflect its ongoing efforts to support scientific innovation and empower students to participate in international competitions, further strengthening Oman’s presence in global scientific forums.
