Ministry introduces external auditor accreditation programme to strengthen data protection in Oman

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has adopted an accreditation programme for external auditors in the field of personal data protection.

MUSCAT : The programme is structured to support organisations in complying with the Personal Data Protection Law (6/2022) and its Executive Regulation (34/2024).

It targets external auditors, ensuring their efficiency and credibility in assessing organisations’ compliance with data protection requirements. Applicants must hold a valid Commercial Registration covering auditing in personal data protection, possess ISO/IEC 27001 and ISO/IEC 27701 certifications, maintain a qualified technical team with at least 30 percent Omanisation, and implement documented audit processes with a minimum five-year records retention policy. Full compliance with national laws and clear data protection and confidentiality policies is also required.

The accreditation process involves submission of applications and supporting documents, evaluation and auditing of the service provider, review of compliance with accreditation standards, approval of terms and conditions, and issuance of the accreditation certificate.
