MUSCAT : The groundwater recharge and surface storage dams in South Sharqiyah Governorate recorded substantial inflows following days of moderate to heavy rainfall across the Sultanate. In the Wilayat of Sur, the flood protection dam surpassed 13 million cubic meters, reaching 60 percent of its total capacity. Authorities subsequently opened the dam to channel excess water towards groundwater recharge and to accommodate further inflows.

In Jaalan Bani Bu Ali, the Wadi Sal dam reached full capacity, exceeding 715,000 cubic meters. Marking its first-ever overflow since construction, the dam’s spillway gates were opened to ease pressure and safely manage the incoming water from surrounding wadis.

Engineer Salah bin Salem Al-Mahajri, Head of the Dams, Aflaj and Protection Walls Department at the South Sharqiyah Water Resources Department, stated that the widespread rainfall led to the flow of valleys across the governorate, significantly contributing to water accumulation in key dams.

He noted that the flood protection dam in Sur and the Wadi Sal dam in Jaalan Bani Bu Ali are vital assets supporting water security, agricultural sustainability, and flood protection for local communities.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, rainfall levels recorded between March 20 and 28 further highlight the scale of the weather impact. Sur received 207 millimeters of rainfall, followed by Al Kamil and Al Wafi at 172 millimeters, Jaalan Bani Bu Hassan at 154 millimeters, and Jaalan Bani Bu Ali at 135 millimeters. Masirah recorded comparatively lower rainfall at 28 millimeters.
