MUSCAT – The Royal Hospital has successfully localised advanced molecular testing for colorectal cancer, including KRAS, NRAS, and BRAF tests, marking a first in the Sultanate of Oman.

The achievement was realised through the efforts of the Medical Laboratories Department, in cooperation with the Histology and Cytology Department.

Previously, these specialised tests were conducted outside the Sultanate, with results taking more than three weeks. With their localisation at the Royal Hospital, test results can now be obtained within one working day, representing a major advancement in the accuracy and speed of tumour diagnosis.
This development is expected to significantly accelerate the initiation of targeted treatments, enhance clinical decision-making efficiency, and improve the overall quality of healthcare services provided to cancer patients.

The initiative aligns with the Ministry of Health’s ongoing efforts to expand specialized diagnostic services and promote precision medicine, in line with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040, which focuses on localizing advanced medical technologies and building a sustainable, innovation-driven healthcare system.
Dr. Mohammed Al Masqari, Head of the Histopathology and Cytopathology Department at the Royal Hospital, stated that localising these molecular tests represents a strategic step in strengthening the national cancer treatment system. He noted that the rapid availability of test results enables physicians to make accurate and timely treatment decisions, thereby improving the patient care journey.

He added that this achievement reflects the high level of technical readiness of the medical laboratories and the competence of national staff, affirming the Royal Hospital’s continued efforts to introduce more advanced specialized tests in accordance with the highest international standards.
