MUSCAT : A minor earthquake measuring 2.6 on the Richter scale was recorded in waters off the coast of Oman early Saturday, according to the Earthquake Monitoring Center at Sultan Qaboos University.

The tremor struck at 3:03 am local time in the Arabian Sea, with its epicentre located around 97 kilometres southwest of Masirah Island, the centre said in an official statement.

Seismological readings indicated the quake occurred at a depth of 12 kilometres, classifying it as a shallow earthquake. Officials confirmed there were no reports of casualties, structural damage, or service disruptions across the Sultanate.

The Earthquake Monitoring Center said it continues to monitor seismic activity in and around Oman through its nationwide network, noting that low-magnitude offshore earthquakes are relatively common and generally do not pose a risk to public safety.
