Muscat – The innovation, titled ‘Production of a Satin Pillow Cover Treated with Modern Nanotechnology Techniques Using Nano Silver and Nano Frankincense’, is the brainchild of Muzna Saif Al Alawi, a student at Sultan Qaboos University. The project is currently in its final development stage under the Scientific Incubator Program, which is funded by the Ministry’s Research and Innovation Sector.
With support from team members Azzah Salem Al Siyabi and Ibrahim Mohammed Al Mahrouqi, and supervision from Dr. Htet Kyaw, the team has engineered a solution to a largely overlooked health concern: the unseen buildup of harmful microorganisms in bedding.
According to research cited from the National Sleep Foundation, an average pillow may harbour more than 170,000 types of bacteria, far more than typically found on a toilet seat. This can pose significant health risks, particularly for individuals with respiratory conditions, sensitive skin, or weakened immune systems.
The newly developed pillow cover incorporates nano silver and nano frankincense particles to inhibit microbial growth and extend cleanliness between washes. Beyond hygiene, the product promises enhanced sleep quality, reduced skin irritation, and a luxurious feel thanks to its satin fabric. It is also eco-friendly, helping reduce the frequency of washing and the use of harsh detergents.
Funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation (MOHERI), Muzna Al Alawi has engineered a satin pillow cover using nano silver and nano frankincense technology. The innovative product, called ‘Comflows Sleep Tight’, aims to drastically reduce the over 170,000 types of bacteria and fungi typically found on pillows, promising a cleaner, safer, and healthier rest for consumers in Oman and beyond.
