Oman pushes digital frontiers as His Majesty the Sultan backs AI and economic transformation

The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology has reaffirmed that His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik places great importance on advancing the National Digital Economy Programme.

Muscat: His Excellency Eng. Said bin Hamood bin Said Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, said that under the royal directives to adopt AI and advanced technologies, Oman has made strong progress in digital transformation. Supported by the Council of Ministers, initiatives are underway to boost the contribution of the digital economy to GDP by localizing technologies, encouraging investments, and supporting emerging tech companies.

His Excellency Dr. Ali bin Amer Al Shidhani, Undersecretary for Communications and Information Technology, highlighted Oman’s leap in international rankings, advancing five places to 45th globally in the Government AI Readiness Index. He pointed to major projects launched at COMEX 2025, including the Digital Oman Triangle, Green AI Alliance, Great Omani Language Model, and AI Studio.

Oman also rose nine places in the UN e-Government Development Index, reaching 41st globally for 2024, with notable progress across digital industry, fintech, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and e-commerce.

Dr. Al Shidhani further emphasized the Sultanate’s growing space sector, which has strengthened Oman’s position as a space launch hub and a gateway for satellite-based applications. He described His Majesty’s vision for AI adoption as a driving force behind Oman’s transformation.
