Geneva: Chaired by His Excellency Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, the Council emphasized the urgent need for multilateralism to confront growing global crises and uphold human dignity.

Held under the theme “Parliamentary Cooperation and Multilateralism for Peace, Justice and Prosperity for All”, the high-level conference, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), brought together speakers from around the world to address pressing challenges such as armed conflicts, displacement, food insecurity, and climate change.

In his address, the Speaker of Oman’s Shura Council warned of the critical phase the world is facing and urged parliaments worldwide to intensify their collaboration. “The world is going through a critical phase characterized by escalating armed conflicts, increasing numbers of refugees and displaced persons, along with crises related to food and energy, and worsening climate change. This requires intensified cooperation between parliaments and concerted efforts to confront these challenges and work together to achieve peace and sustainable development,” he stated.

His Excellency also reaffirmed Oman’s longstanding role as a cultural bridge rooted in dialogue, openness, and mutual understanding. He highlighted the need for parliamentary platforms to foster communication across differing ideologies and strengthen global solidarity.

On the humanitarian front, His Excellency voiced deep concern over the situation in Gaza. The Palestinian people have legitimate rights, including the establishment of an independent state. We call on all parliaments to act firmly to end the violations and ensure urgent humanitarian relief, he emphasized.

During the conference, the Shura Council presented two key discussion papers. The first, titled “Innovation for the Future,” tackled modern challenges such as conflict and climate change, and emphasized the role of parliaments in building trust and inclusive societies. The second paper, “Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030,” showcased Oman’s efforts in food security, healthcare, and green energy, underscoring the legislative role in driving sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the event, His Excellency Al Maawali held bilateral meetings with several regional and international legislative leaders, discussing enhanced cooperation and joint responses to urgent global and regional issues, particularly the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
