MUSCAT : Oman’s ranking improved from level 4 to level 3 on the index’s scale, marking significant progress in the country’s labour rights landscape. This advancement reflects enhanced protections for workers and a more supportive environment for trade unions within the Sultanate.

The General Federation of Oman Workers played a key role in achieving this improved classification through sustained efforts at both the national and international levels. Their work included advocating for labour reforms and strengthening dialogue among key stakeholders.

The index credits Oman’s progress to a series of recent reforms in labour laws and regulations. These reforms have notably improved workers’ access to justice and promoted a more effective tripartite dialogue involving the government, worker representatives, and employers. Central to these efforts has been the establishment of a joint dialogue committee comprising representatives from all parties, tasked with the formulation and amendment of labour laws and policies.

Additionally, the Sultanate has enhanced dispute resolution mechanisms and strengthened channels of communication on labour issues, further contributing to the positive shift in its ranking.

The annual Global Rights Index provides a comprehensive global assessment of trade union and human rights by country. Updated annually and released by the ITUC during the International Labour Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, the index ranks countries on a scale from 1 (best) to 5 (worst). The assessment considers 97 indicators derived from International Labour Organization (ILO) labour standards. These indicators encompass various aspects of trade union rights, including restrictions on collective bargaining, the right to strike, union membership, violence against trade unionists, and limitations on freedom of expression.
