MUSCAT : The Modern College of Business and Science (MCBS) has earned a STARS Gold rating from the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), in recognition of its comprehensive sustainability achievements. The STARS (Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System) framework measures and promotes sustainability performance across all aspects of higher education institutions, including academics, operations, and community engagement.

MCBS’s STARS report is publicly available on the STARS website:

This milestone highlights MCBS’s long-standing commitment to sustainable development and responsible institutional practices, underscoring its alignment with global sustainability goals and Oman Vision 2040. By adopting STARS as a benchmarking tool, MCBS further affirms its role as a regional leader in sustainability-focused higher education.

”This STARS Gold Rating is a powerful validation of the ambitious sustainability journey MCBS has undertaken,” said Dr. Muneer Al Maskari, Executive Chairman of MCBS. “Our achievement represents the collective vision, dedication, and resilience of our community in driving forward environmental stewardship, social impact, and responsible governance.”

With more than 1,200 participants in 52 countries, AASHE’s STARS program is the most widely recognized framework in the world for publicly reporting comprehensive information related to a college or university’s sustainability performance. Participants report achievements in five overall areas: 1) academics 2) engagement, 3) operations, 4) planning and administration, and 5) innovation and leadership.

“STARS was developed by the campus sustainability community to provide high standards for recognizing campus sustainability efforts,” said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser. “MCBS has demonstrated a substantial commitment to sustainability by achieving a STARS Gold Rating and is to be congratulated for their efforts.”

MCBS’s STARS Gold submission, completed under version 3 of the framework, followed rigorous internal validation processes to ensure data accuracy, transparency, and alignment with STARS standards. The STARS system, which is open to all higher education institutions, offers a transparent, credit-based framework for measuring sustainability performance and enables benchmarking both internally and against peer institutions. Through its integrated approach—spanning academics, research, operations, and community engagement—MCBS continues to advance its mission of developing ethical, sustainability-minded global citizens. Key initiatives include the AI-Integrated Smart Sustainability Lab, student-led climate action projects, and resource efficiency campaigns targeting energy, water, and waste.

“We are proud to have achieved the STARS Gold rating, which reflects our college-wide commitment to sustainability and continuous improvement. We look forward to further advancing our initiatives in alignment with global best practices through the STARS framework.” said Dr Moosa Al Kindi, Dean of MCBS.
