MUSCAT : Responding to a question from TAS CEO Nishad Padiyarath regarding the recent rollout of caller ID services for fixed-line users, Wail Kalbani said the move is part of a broader effort to combat fraudulent and impersonation calls. “Business caller ID is a mandatory requirement to be complied with by operators as part of the effort to combat fraudulent and impersonation calls,” he stated.
He added that the TRA has based its approach on international best practices, including mechanisms for spam risk alert verification. “While current focus is on verified business caller ID, enhanced features such as fraud risk indicators may be explored in the future,” he pointed out.
The comment was made during the final session of the summit, which addressed key cybersecurity challenges in the financial and telecom sectors and highlighted ongoing efforts by authorities to strengthen protections against digital fraud.
The TRA recently introduced business caller ID services for fixed-line users of Omantel and Ooredoo, allowing recipients to view the name of the calling business even if the number is not stored—enhancing transparency and public trust in telecommunications.
