Muscat – The move is part of the centre’s ongoing efforts to remain at the forefront of global medical innovation and to provide world-class cardiovascular treatment services in the Sultanate of Oman.
The AlphaVac system is a state-of-the-art interventional technology for treating pulmonary embolism and venous thromboembolism. It enables the efficient removal of blood clots from large veins without the need for open surgery. This represents a qualitative shift in traditional treatment models, offering patients the opportunity for a rapid recovery while significantly reducing complication rates.

According to the specialised medical team from the Interventional Radiology Department, the introduction of AlphaVac is a reflection of the Royal Hospital’s strategy to adopt the latest medical advancements and position itself as a national reference centre in cardiac care. It also aligns with Oman’s broader vision to enhance its status in the regional and international medical community.
The team explained that the procedure is performed by inserting a catheter into the femoral vein under X-ray guidance, and the clot is removed using a special control device that reduces blood loss. The session takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes, compared to several hours in open surgery, with the patient able to leave intensive care in less than 24 hours.
The medical team reported that the technique has achieved a success rate exceeding 90 percent in clot removal, with a marked decrease in complications and bleeding. This makes it especially beneficial for patients who are not suitable candidates for surgery.
Patients treated with AlphaVac have shown a notable improvement in recovery speed and quality of life, with many resuming normal activities shortly after the procedure. The center noted a rise in patient and caregiver confidence in this new technology.
The medical team emphasised that the introduction of the AlphaVac system represents a milestone in the qualitative transformation of healthcare services in the Sultanate of Oman, and underscores the Royal Hospital’s commitment to adopting all measures that will enhance the level of healthcare provided to citizens and residents.
