KERALA: Known affectionately as TPG, Nambiar’s legacy dates back to the founding of British Physical Laboratories (BPL) in Kerala’s Palakkad district in 1963. He established BPL initially to produce panel meters for the Indian defense forces before expanding into consumer electronics and medical equipment. By the 1990s, BPL had become a household name, selling over a million televisions a month across India and symbolizing quality home electronics for generations.

As a prominent figure in India’s industrial landscape, TPG Nambiar was also the father-in-law of BJP leader and former Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar. His passing was mourned by many, including former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa, who expressed his condolences on social media.

BPL, now led by Nambiar’s son Ajit Nambiar, shifted its focus from consumer electronics to medical equipment following the company’s decline in the consumer market. Today, BPL remains one of India’s most trusted names in ECG and medical devices, with a range of products that include portable X-ray machines, oximeters, and oxygen concentrators—products that were essential during the COVID-19 pandemic.
