Muscat – The Authority confirmed that it will work diligently to implement this Royal Decree in collaboration with relevant ministries and agencies, ensuring compliance with the amendment’s provisions.
The Kigali Amendment is crucial in reducing the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), potent greenhouse gases that contribute significantly to global warming. While HFCs do not deplete the ozone layer, their global warming potential can be many times greater than that of carbon dioxide.
In line with the ratification, the Environment Authority will introduce the necessary legislative and technical measures to control greenhouse gas emissions in the Sultanate. The amendment is expected to facilitate financial and technical support for participating countries, promoting technology transfer and helping to develop national strategies for reducing HFC usage.
The Kigali Amendment also aims to regulate trade in HFCs between countries that have ratified the amendment and those that have not, promoting the adoption of energy-efficient technologies. This initiative aligns with Oman’s national contributions to the Paris Climate Agreement.
It is important to note that the Kigali Amendment, adopted in 2016 in Rwanda, is the fifth and latest amendment to the Montreal Protocol, which was initially established in 1987. Since its introduction, over 137 countries, including Oman, have ratified the amendment, reflecting a global commitment to environmental sustainability and climate action.
