MUSCAT : The data, showing a 35% decrease in accidents, 46% drop in deaths, and 33% decline in injuries, underscores a positive trend in road safety during the holy month.

Brigadier Engineer Ali bin Sulayem Al Falahi, the Director General of Traffic, has emphasized the collective responsibility shared by all members of society to uphold road safety standards and ensure smooth traffic flow during Ramadan. Factors contributing to increased traffic during this period include heightened commercial activities, social gatherings for iftar, and individuals rushing to complete tasks before breaking their fast.

Al Falahi highlighted several dangerous driving behaviours observed during Ramadan, such as speeding, reckless driving, and distracted driving caused by mobile phone use. These behaviours, improper lane changes, and overtaking significantly contribute to traffic accidents, especially on single-lane and two-way roads.

Addressing truck movements, Al Falahi outlined specific times when truck passage is restricted on main roads in Muscat Governorate and Al-Dakhiliyah Road to mitigate traffic congestion. He also warned about the dangers of various types of bicycles when misused, stressing the need for awareness and compliance with traffic laws and regulations.

Acknowledging the positive role of community efforts and responsible driving in enhancing traffic safety, the Royal Oman Police urged drivers to stay focused, practice tolerance, and adhere to traffic rules. Recommendations include maintaining a safe distance from other vehicles, signalling lane changes, taking breaks when fatigued, and engaging in activities to stay alert while driving.
