Muscat – Normal sleep patterns, with sufficient hours, contributes to maintaining the immune system in the elderly and also helps to maintain weight, heart health and enhance mental activity, said a MOH Twitter post.
The post referred to a statement from the Gulf Health Council for the Cooperation Council States through its social media accounts and through its awareness series (Rumor of the Week), which addressed the common question relating to normal sleep patterns among the elderly. Many, it said, believe that sleep rate declines with age.
It addressed the question, ‘Does the rate of sleep decrease with age?’ with a straightforward answer, ‘No’.

According to specialists in the subject, the elderly need to sleep at the same rate as adults, which is approximately 7 to 8 hours of sleep per day.
The Council cautioned that lack of enough sleep could prove to be a major contributing factor in several diseases, including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes, and also impact concentration and mood rates. On the other hand, moderate sleep with sufficient hours contributes to maintaining the immune system in the elderly and also helps to maintain weight, enhances mental activity, and maintains cardiovascular health, it said.
