MUSCAT: It’s the time of night out as a celestial treat is in store for astromancers and stargazers in the Sultanate of Oman when meteors will illuminate the sky in the coming nights.
To watch the meteor showers, one doesn’t need a special eye wear or binocular or telescope as in cases of watching eclipses and can be viewed from the naked eye.
The astronomer Yousef Al Salmi of the Al Hoqain Astronomical Observatory has confirmed that Oman’s sky will witness the fall of bright meteors in the coming nights.
“Several bright meteors were seen in many countries, including in North America and Europe, and even here in the Sultanate, where there were reports of sighting them,” Yousef said.
“These meteors resulted from the debris of a comet called Taurid and it is believed that it exploded more than 20,000 years ago. Its debris remained in Space till now and it is entering the Earth’s atmosphere now.”
And about the time of watching it, Yousef said: “It is expected to increase during the coming nights. We will urge everyone who witnesses the fall to mention the timing of the fall, the direction, and the intensity of the brightness.”
He explained that the fireball will look like ordinary meteors, but it is brighter and brighter, and sometimes if it is not completely burned, it falls in the form of a meteor and it may make a sound and a thunderous sound during the fall.
“These meteors are the remnants of comets consisting of rocks and dust. When they approach the Earth and get in touch with the atmosphere, contact with air particles will lead to its combustion. That’s why we see them in a bright, luminous colour,” Yousef concluded.
