MUSCAT: The day after issuing warning against commercialization of Royal emblems, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP) on Wednesday raided shops and seized products containing the Sultanate’s flag, emblem and map on it.

In a statement MoCIIP said: “The Ministry carried out inspection campaigns for shops and confiscated a number of displayed products which contained (the state emblem, the state flag, the map of the Sultanate of Oman) without obtaining the necessary license from the ministry.”

On Tuesday the Ministry had issued a warning, in which it clearly stated that (private) institutions, commercial companies and social media accounts are strictly prohibited from using the Sultanate’s emblem, explaining that a license can be obtained from the Ministry to use the Sultanate of Oman’s logo, flag and map on various commercial products.

The penalty in the event of a violation of this decision was clarified by Chapter Five (Penalties) of the Law of the State’s Flag, Emblem and National Anthem issued by Royal Decree 53/2004, where Article 15 of it states the following:

Without prejudice to any more severe penalty stipulated in any other law, the violator shall be punished with a fine of no less than OMR 200 and not more than OMR 1,000 in the following cases:

1- Committing the acts stipulated in Article (12) of this law, in which case the seized items shall be confiscated.
2- Deliberately raising the flag if it is worn or torn, or if its condition is not in keeping with the honor of his stature, or if it does not meet the specifications and standards stipulated in Appendix No. (1) attached.
3- Deliberately not lowering the flag during official mourning.

Article 12 of the Law on the State Flag, Emblem and National Anthem states: It is prohibited to use the logo as a trademark or for the purpose of advertising or commercial advertising. It is also prohibited to place the logo on jewelry, products or tools that are produced or manufactured locally, or to import any of them without prior permission from the Minister of Trade and Industry.
