MUSCAT: The Sultanate of Oman topped the Arab countries in the efficiency of government efforts to reduce tobacco, according to the Global Index of Tobacco Industry Interventions in the World for 2021.
The index was issued by the Global Center for Good Governance in the Field of Tobacco Control (GGTC), in partnership with the Initiative to Prevent Tobacco Enterprises and Products, which included 80 countries.
The Sultanate ranked 16th globally, and first in the Arab world, while Sudan came second, and Egypt third.
The index consists of sub-indicators — level of participation in policy development; social responsibility activities of tobacco companies; benefits to the tobacco industry; unnecessary interactions; transparency; preventive measures.
Brunei Darussalam topped the index, followed by New Zealand and Britain.
