MUSCAT: Normal life has been put on hold for the next four-days, as the Supreme Committee’s decision to impose an unprecedented full nationwide lockdown has come into force from 5 pm on Monday.

The strict lockdown measures include complete closure of commercial activities except for emergency and a ban on movements of individuals and vehicles. The Eid Al Adha (which begins today), prayers, and celebrations has been cancelled, and all traditional habta markets will be closed. During the complete lockdown, groceries and restaurants will remain closed.

Hours before the lockdown, chaotic scenes prevailed at supermarkets, shopping malls, shops and ATMs as people stepped out in huge numbers to stock up essentials.

Many areas in Muscat witnessed a huge rush as some supermarkets opened as early as 5 am on Monday.

“I went to a shop this morning at 7 and had to wait for more than 30 minutes in queue to buy a packet of milk,” said Nileesh Gupta, a Muscat based resident.

“People are stocking up more than what is required,” Gupta said.

With only 50 percent capacity allowed inside, many shopping malls and supermarkets kept “no entry” board outside to ensure Covid-19 rules are followed.

“With all the supermarkets and restaurants closed during the full lockdown period, it’s quite obvious that people will rush to buy in the last-minute,” said Mohammed Al Balushi, who stays in Darsait.

Meanwhile, the Royal Oman Police has activated control points between governorates, while a joint operations centre has been opened to facilitate the lockdown procedures.
