MUSCAT: In the wake of rising coronavirus cases in the country, the Supreme Committee has urged citizens and residents to avoid crowded shopping malls and markets.
“The Supreme Committee urges everyone to avoid holding social gatherings , funerals, iftars or weddings and visiting commercial establishments at crowded times,” the statement from the Supreme Committee said
Oman has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths over the last many weeks, which has promoted the Supreme Committee to take more stringent measures. On Friday, the Supreme Committee extended the night movement ban and closure of commercial activities in Dhofar Governorate from 6pm to 5am.

“The epidemiological situation of COVID-19 cases in Dhofar Governorate has been reviewed as the number has increased steadily during the last period, which in turn triggered the ICU admissions and mortalities that outstripped the capacity,” the statement said.
Meanwhile, the committee said it may take more tougher measures including imposing a complete lockdown in Dhofar Governorate. “The Committee stresses that this decision is subject to review at a later stage, based on the epidemiological indicators, and that it is about to take stringent decisions to contain the pandemic, including a full closure of the epidemiological situation required,” the Supreme Committee added.
