MUSCAT: Oman’s Supreme Committee on Friday said it will take more stringent measures including a complete lockdown in Dhofar Governorate “if the epidemiological situation calls for it.”
The statement comes in the wake of an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Dhofar which has triggered the ICU admissions and mortalities that outstripped the capacity. On Friday, the Supreme Committee decided to extend the night movement ban and closure of commercial activities in Dhofar Governorate between 6pm till 5am, starting from Saturday April 17 until further notice.
“The Committee stresses that this decision is subject to review at a later stage, based on the epidemiological indicators, and that it is about to take stringent decisions to contain the pandemic, including a full closure of the epidemiological situation required,” the statement from the Supreme Committee said.

“Accordingly, the Supreme Committee urges everyone to avoid practices that could lead to a COVID -19 surge, prominently failing to practice social distancing, wearing face masks in mosques of other public settings, and holding social gatherings, funerals, iftars or weddings and visiting commercial establishments at crowded times,” the committee added.
As of Thursday, Oman recorded 176,668, including 1821 deaths.
