MUSCAT : The Supreme Committee’s decision to close the country’s borders was taken as part of precautionary measure to stem the outbreak of the new Covid-19 strain, according to the Minister of Health.

Speaking in an interview with Oman TV, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi said: “The Supreme Committee’s decision today was a precaution due to the inability to determine the countries in which the new strain of virus is spread.”

Oman on Monday decided to close its borders including temporarily shutting airports for one week as a fast spreading new Covid-19 variant is spreading across the UK. However, the Minister said there are no indications to prove that the new strain of virus is dangerous. “There are no indications so far that the new strain of Covid-19 is more dangerous than the previous one,” Al Saidi said.

“The whole world is waiting for additional information from the United Kingdom about the new strain of Coronavirus,” he added.
