MUSCAT: As Oman will lift the subsidies on electricity and water in a phased manner from January 2021 till 2025, the government has issued the new tariff for both citizens and expatriates, and large companies in the industrial sector.
According to the decision issued by Mohammed Bin Hamad Al Rumhy, Minister of Energy and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Public Services Regulatory Authority, the new tariff will come into effect from January 1.
Currently both citizens and expatriates are being benefited from the government subsidies, however, starting next month only those from the financially vulnerable will be receiving the scheme through the National Subsidy System.

Electricity tariff
According to the statement from Ministry of Finance, the tariff for electricity has been divided into two main categories — Citizen Account Tariff and Resident and Additional Accounts Tariff.
The Citizen Account Tariff will be applied to accounts registered in the names of citizens not exceeding two accounts per citizen. 15 bz has been specified for consumption from (0-200) kilowatt, 20 bz for consumption from (2001-4000), and 30 bz for consumption exceeding 4000 kilowatts.
Tariffs of resident accounts and additional accounts will be applied to accounts registered in the names of residents and additional accounts exceeding two accounts per citizen.
An amount of 20 bz has been specified for consumption from (0-500) kilowatt, 25 bz for consumption from (501-1500), and 30 baisa for consumption that excess 1500 kilowatts.

Water tariff
The new tariff for water includes the category of non-residential consumption which includes all non-residential uses. It has been decided that 4.5 bz is identified per gallon and 990 bz per cubic meter.
The second category is residential consumption which is divided into citizen account, resident’s account, and additional accounts. The tariff of the citizen’s account will be applied to accounts registered in the names of citizens, not exceeding two accounts for each citizen as 2.5 bz per gallon and 550 bz per cubic meter.
The resident account and the additional accounts will be applied to those registered in the names of residents and additional accounts that exceed two accounts per citizen.They are identified to be 3 bz per gallon and 660 bz per cubic meter.
