KOZHIKODE: Air India Express aircraft from Dubai to Kozhikode with 186 onboard crashed after overshooting the runway and going into the valley after landing at Calicut Airport. 18 people, including two pilots, have lost their lives so far.
“180 passengers and 6 crew members were on board the flight. 149 injured passengers admitted to hospitals in Malappuram and Kozhikode districts, 22 in critical condition. 22 discharged after first aid,” said K Gopalakrishnan, Malappuram Collector on Saturday.

First images from the site showed the aircraft broken in two pieces with debris strewn over the runway.
According to the officer, the incident happened around 7:40pm local time. Currently, Kerala including Calicut is witnessing heavy rainfall.
“Deeply distressed to hear about the Air India Express tragedy at Kozhikode. Prayers are with the bereaved families and those injured. We are ascertaining further details,” said S. Jaishankar, India’s External Affairs Minister.
