MUSCAT: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has send a message to Michel Aoun expressing Oman’s solidarity with Lebanon following a massive explosion that killed at least 78 people and wounded more than 4,000 in the capital, Beirut.

In a statement issued by the Oman News Agency (ONA) said His Majesty has send a condolences to those died in the explosion and prayers to the injured.

The explosion released shockwaves through the city, flattening much of the port, damaging buildings and sending a giant mushroom cloud into the sky.

It’s still unclear what exactly caused the explosion, which appears to have been centered on the city’s port area. It was earlier blamed on a fire that broke out.

Lebanon’s Prime Minister said that an estimated 2,750 tons of the explosive ammonium nitrate had been stored at a warehouse in Beirut for six years.
