Oman road accidents claimed over 500 lives in 2019, over-speeding major killer

MUSCAT: A total of 511 people died and 2,442 people suffered injuries from 2,120 road accidents in 2019, according to the statistics released by the National Centre for Statistics and Survey (NCSI).

904 accidents occurred due to collisions between vehicles, while 416 accidents were due to runover and 419 accidents due to collision with fixed objects. According to the survey, speed was the main factor for 269 fatalities that happened in 2019. However, there has been a significant drop in death cases due to accidents compared to 384 in 2018.

Meanwhile, 114 pedestrians died in 2019 due to road accidents while 252 were injured.

On Sunday, a child died and four others injured when a car they were travelling caught fire after it collided with three vehicles, the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance reported. The incident happened in Al Mudhaibi.
