Fraud alert: Central Bank of Oman warns citizens, residents of fake WhatsApp messages

MUSCAT: The Central Bank of Oman has warned citizens and residents to be on their guard against scam messages being sent via social networking site WhatsApp.

CBO warned people not to open links sent on WhatsApp with fraudulent messages claiming to be an employee of a bank operating in Oman.

“Citizens and residents are advised to avoid responding to such messages, and opening any hyperlink that may be attached, which may provide exposure to a malicious website,” CBO said.

CBO stressed that banks operating in the Sultanate does not use social networking sites to contact individuals or businesses, and reminded customers to always protect their confidential information. “Do not any personal or banking information over the phone or through social media, or to respond to requests to transfer funds to the accounts of companies or individuals,” CBO added.
