Checkpoints in Muttrah removed but not the virus: Health authorities cautions public

MUSCAT: With sanitary isolation lifted and checkpoints removed in most parts of Wilayat Muttrah, the city roads witnessed more vehicles on Sunday, nearly 65 days after curbs were imposed to check the spread of coronavirus.

Vehicles whizzed through Darsait and Al Wadi Al Kabir that had been almost entirely deserted a day earlier. However, authorities have cautioned the public not to venture out unnecessarily as cases are rising. Oman on Sunday reported 866 new Covid-19 cases, taking the total tally to 16,882 including 75 deaths. Muttrah alone reported 102 cases on Sunday. Total cases now in Muttrah touched 4,808.

“The virus is still very aggressive. We have eased restrictions including removing checkpoints to bring life slowly back to normal but that does not mean people can wander out unnecessary. They need to stay safe and respect the social distancing measures,” said a senior official at the Ministry of Health.

Restrictions are still in place in isolated areas of Wilayat Muttrah such as Hamriyah, Wadi Kabir Industrial area and Old Muttrah. “Cases are still higher in these areas and we will review it after two weeks and then decide,” added Dr. Saif Al Abri, DG at MOH.
