MUSCAT: One of the biggest challenges faced by health workers around the world amid the coronavirus pandemic is trying to save lives when the number of patients needing critical care overtakes the available medical infrastructure.

In what is a matter of pride, a group of young engineers at the Oman Industry Centre managed to develop an electronic artificial respirator for patients having breathing difficulties.

The respirator was developed by Omani engineers after seeking advice of specialists working in the health sector.

“This is developed for patients who has breathing difficulties during the time of coronavirus. This initiative comes in conjunction with various national efforts to reduce the spread of the virus,” said Engineer Sulaiman Al-Saqri, from the Oman Industry Center.

“The device designed differs from the real machine and we have added some features after carefully reviewing other devices,” he added.

The device according to Al Saqri is undergoing tests to ensure its performance and readiness before they start to produce more quantities for hospitals in Oman.

The Oman Industry Centre is part of the Scientific Research Council.
