Covid-19: Two jailed, fined OMR 1,000 in Oman for coronavirus ‘prank’

Several others were also arrested for inciting the public to disobey the Supreme Committee’s orders.

MUSCAT: A man looking to gain social media popularity filmed pretending to suffer from Covid-19 and sneezed on banknotes before handing it to a restaurant staff.

The man along with his friend who shot the video was arrested for the prank after it went viral on social media.

The court of first instance sentenced the two people to one month in jail and fined OMR 1,000.

Meanwhile, a primary court in Sur handed down a one-year jail term and OMR 1,000 fine to a person who send an audio clip to officials inciting them to disobey order of Supreme Committee for taking precautionary measures in the fight against the Covid-19 outbreak. The court ordered the confiscation of the convict’s mobile phone.

Another court has sentenced a number of people to one year in prison and OMR 1,000 fine for circulating tweets and audio clips inciting public opinion against the Supreme Committee’s measures aimed to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.

The court ordered the confiscation of the convicts’ smart phones.
