MUSCAT: The government “cannot compel” educational institutions to reduce tuition fees amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) confirmed on Thursday.

The Ministry was responding to a student’s query on social media on why colleges in the country are not reducing fees when classes are being conducted only through online.

“Ministry cannot compel institutions to reduce tuition fees unless the institution wishes to do so and we suggest that student advisory councils can communicate with the management of these institutions to discuss this matter,” the Ministry said.

Distance learning comes with a cost

According to MOHE, the distance learning system comes with a cost as the colleges bear the cost for managing the process that includes the salaries of employees and academics. “ The distance learning system is an integrated study that simulates face-to-face education. The educational institution bears the costs for managing the process in the form of salaries of employees and academics, and the cost of preparing the electronic content,” the Ministry added.
