MUSCAT: Oman reported a drop in new coronavirus cases for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, as the country appeared to have greatly slowed its epidemic.
On Tuesday, Ministry of Health reported 13 new cases taking the total figures to 192 in the country.
The number of new infections has fallen sharply this week. It is worth noting that, on March 27, Oman reported 22 cases, while the trend continued on March 28 when 21 cases were reported. This took the total figures past 150. However, from March 29th, the number of cases drastically dropped down. Only 15 cases were reported on March 29, while 12 cases were reported on March 30.

According to the data provided by the World Health Organisation (WHO), Oman has the lowest coronavirus cases reported in the entire GCC. Saudi Arabia has the highest number of coronavirus cases in the GCC. 1453 people have tested positive for the virus and 8 deaths. With 693 cases Qatar comes second with one death. UAE is on third with 611 cases while Bahrain and Kuwait has 515 and 289 cases respectively.
“Oman has acted swiftly and aggressively to contain the virus. The country took some tough measures and even set up a high level committee to deal with Covid-19 and that has certainly helped to reduce the number to a certain extend,” said Dr. Jacob Varghese, a health expert based in India.
Oman has already introduced a number of strict measures aimed at bringing the spread of the virus under control, including closing all schools and universities, shopping malls, shops, public gatherings and suspending all flights to and from the country
While, the new case numbers are declining largely, the top officials at the Ministry of Health are expecting a rise in the coming days. “Community transmission of COVID-19 began last week. This means there are cases in the community that are yet to be detected. The peak of the COVID-19 outbreak in Oman will be during mid-April, and the upcoming two weeks will see an increase in the number of cases due to the return of students studying overseas,” said Dr. Ahmed Al Saidi, Minister of Health in an interview with Arabic radio station Shabiba FM.
