MUSCAT: The Ministry of Health (MOH) in Oman has warned people against spreading rumours about coronavirus in the country.

An audio clip claiming a case of coronavirus victim in Oman went viral on Thursday. However, MOH on Friday clarified it was an old audio of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) case that was registered in the country few years ago.

The ministry warned people not to spread panic and false rumours about coronavirus.

Earlier on Thursday, the Ministry in coordination with Public Prosecution had issued a warning against spreading false information on social media. “Spreading false information on social media is a crime in Oman and could get a jail term of three years,” the statement added.
