When life gets harder, challenge yourself to be stronger: Her Highness Sayyida Basma Al Said

MUSCAT: Her Highness Sayyida Basma Al Said, Founder of the Whispers of Serenity Clinic for Mental Health is considered as an icon in the health sector.

HH Basma has been recognised for her active efforts in raising awareness about mental health in the Arab region. 

On HerStory – Oman’s first women based talk show, presented by The Arabian Stories, HH Basma Al Said spoke candidly about the challenges she faced in opening her own clinic and the perception people have on mental health. “I don’t believe that it is still a stigma. But I do believe that it will not be eliminated completely. There will be a small percentage (of people) that will always be stigmatized. But today when we do our awareness campaigns like NotAlone Stories, there are so many people who wants to talk. How is that a stigma?”

Stop changing people around you, they are not going to change, unless you change.

On facing tough challenges in life, she said: “When life gets harder, challenge yourself to be stronger.”

She also has a message to young Omani women who wants to pursue mental health as a profession. “Stop changing people around you, they are not going to change, unless you change. You have to change first. It took time for me as a therapist to understand this, but you changing is stronger than you wanting others to change.”
