Though it was the southern part of the Indian sub-continent that faced the wrath of Cyclone Mandous – an Arabic title given to the storm that smothered the city of Chennai – it was the soccer fields of Qatar that were left soggy and wet due to the exiting stars shedding tears. This, however, overshadowing a grand African show, could not take away the sheen of Morocco’s record-breaking achievement.

The top-ranked teams have made it to the quarterfinal stage as expected and convincing among them were indeed Neymar-backed Brazil and Cristiano Ronaldo-less Portugal. The classic touch game of the Samba boys touched everyone’s heart and when everyone thought Portugal was nothing without CR7, the Fernando Santos-coached team proved otherwise. From the Round of Eight, all qualified teams are equal favourites and all of them will look to win the next three games to realise their dreams.
War against VAR getting serious as days pass by
As the World Cup in Qatar is heating up with many of the teams (mostly favorites, with exceptions) making the knock-out phase, the debate now has been on the decisions made by Video Assistant Referees (VAR), which appears to be influencing the on-field officials. Here, I take you through some (only some, though most of them have triggered debates) of the decisions that have raised eyebrows. No doubt technology is given high regard these days than the human eye.
