MUSCAT : A total of 444 violations were recorded in two months in Muscat Governorate regarding the non-availability of electronic payment services at commercial establishments, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion said on Thursday.
In January 2022, Oman made e-payment mandatory in shopping malls, restaurants, cafes, commercial centres, gift markets, jewellery shops, activities selling foodstuffs, fruits and vegetables, electronic shops, activities in industrial areas, building material activities and tobacco shops.
According to the ministry, the violations were registered during the months of February and March. The response from the ministry comes after several people complained on social media regarding the non-availability of e-payment devices in several shops.

Working to overcome challenges
Meanwhile, the ministry said it is working with the Central Bank of Oman to overcome the challenges for merchants to obtain the device. “We are working with CBO to overcome the challenges that delayed the merchant’s obtaining the device, and coordination is currently underway with banks and companies to provide it faster to cover the demand,” the ministry added.
