Jakarta: The Indonesian capital was struck by a 5.6-magnitude on Monday, prompting evacuations in Jakarta’s central business district. AFP journalists working in their office tower in Jakarta were also ordered to evacuate the building. Witnesses have reported feeling their buildings shake and seeing furniture move, and have accounted for the panic that hit them, as the quake struck.

According to the Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika (BMKG), an Indonesian non-departmental government agency for meteorology, climatology, and geophysics, the epicenter of the earthquake has been located in Cianjur, in the island of West Java, at a depth of 10 km.

While earthquakes and tremors are a common occurrence in Indonesia, being located on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” sometimes they give rise to a Tsunami panic. However, the BMKG has assured that there is no potential for the dreaded marine disaster as of now.
