MUSCAT: Omani girl Safa bint Salim bin Khalfan Al Harasiya’s phone hasn’t stopped ringing since Thursday. What started as a normal day, turned extraordinary after her school called and told her she had scored a whopping 99.7% — making her the topper in the General Education Diploma (Grade 12) examinations for the year 2018-2019.

Safa who studied at the Nizwa School chose Science stream (Physics, Chemsitry, Biology and Mathematics).

Safa said studying regularly and consistently was the key. “I prepared for each subject according to their importance and it worked on my favour,” she said speaking to online Arabic media Atheer.

Safa was always against private tutors but took the help of her teachers. “I never had a fixed number of hours devoted to studies, nor did I attend any coaching or tuitions. My school, parents and teachers have been my torch bearers,” she said.

There is no specific success mantra. It was pure hard-work. Each one of us is special and all of us have a unique pattern of doing our best.

She also attributed her success to her family. “My parents are always my source of motivation,” Safa said. “My family members including my brothers and sisters stood with me to ensure I realise my dream,” she said.

No tuitions
Safa faced several hurdles during her studies, especially when she was away from school for many weeks to attend the Mathematics Olympiad. “That was a challenged indeed because I missed several weeks classes but thankfully I managed to cover-up the portions,” she said.

Asked her success mantra, the talented Safa had this to say: There is no specific success mantra. It was pure hard-work. Each one of us is special and all of us have a unique pattern of doing our best. I just realized mine with this. Let this motivate others.”

41,978 students appeared in the General Education Diploma regular course this year and the success rate was 83.82 per cent. The success rate in the General Education Diploma for private schools (bilingual) was 93.17 per cent in which 1,190 students appeared.
